1880-84 Original Gowns

Comments by Kay Inverarity

Ladies bodice in cream satin entirely covered with black lace the bodice peaks front and back and laces down the front, the sleeves are elbow length with cream lace ruffles and satin ribbon trim to the cuffs.  The bodice originally dates from the 1880's but shows signs of alteration so that it could be worn in the 1890's.  The bodice originally was worn on the outside of the skirt but shows considerable damage where it was later tucked into the skirt.  The skirt is also in cream satin and black lace, the skirt has had at least two panels removed and altered so that it could be worn later.  The waist band has had double sided satin ribbon applied, so that the skirt can be worn over the bodice,  The whole gown is quite worn and fragile.
